The Victorian Government has given approval for the construction of Australia 108, a 388m high, 108 storey building set to be the tallest in the Southern Hemisphere.

It is set to be built in Melbourne’s Southbank area, and will be used as a hotel and apartment building.

The Melbourne City Council originally opposed the project, with fears that it may overshadow the Shrine of Remembrance, however, an agreement between Planning Minister Matthew Guy and shrine trustees was reached and concerns from both parties were addressed.

Construction is set the finished in 2017.
