StartCon 2019 (A Freelancer.com event)

Media and Content Coordinator - StartCon

From September 2019, I joined the StartCon team, Australia’s Largest Startup and Growth conference. With over 4000+ attendees, 60+ international and domestic speakers, 160+ exhibitor booths, the Australasian Startup Awards and the Pitch for $1M Competition, it marks the region’s biggest startup showcase event of the year.

Originally part of Freelancer.com’s Acquisitions and Content Team, I joined the team to manage and coordinate marketing content and media, including liaising with our designers for social media content and producing content for EDMs and social media.

As the Media and Content Coordinator, I was in contact with our esteemed list of international and domestic speakers in ensuring that content was delivered as per the content calendar that I had formulated. Leading up to the event, in addition to sending promotional material to our 40,000-strong marketing database, I was able to coordinate and execute the content calendar via social media, even through the ever-changing schedule and speaker lists leading up to the event.

As a result, we were able to see higher engagement versus similar events even as they were running, including southstart and CEBIT.

Total Page Views

A significant growth occurred in the immediate days leading to the event. As the content calendar was established, total views saw an upward trend through organic traffic.

Around the same time as the implementation of the content calendar, the total Facebook Page likes trajectory jumped.

After joining the team in late-September, we were able to net over 500k total impressions over 300 tweets.

As Twitter required a very specific and limited posting style, the content on LinkedIn and Facebook were very similar in copy.

EDM Marketing and Distribution

As StartCon is in its 10th year, we’ve compiled a 40,000-strong email database for parties interested in startups, growth or many of the other events we host at the Freelancer.com office throughout the year. A majority of EDMs sent out we speaker announcements, although we sent out communications as part of our agreement with some sponsors, including Austrade, Airwallex and Table Tennis Australia. Overall, we were able to get a very high open rate for our early announcements, partner EDMs and conference event emails, with a 75% open rate and a 55% click rate.
